Newborn Essentials Checklist: What You Really Need for the First 3 Months
Getting ready for a new baby comes with a long shopping list, and it's easy to buy too much of some things and forget others. This newborn essentials checklist covers what you really need for the first three months, from clothing to bath time, with simple tips from the Bibble team.
Newborn clothing essentials
Babies grow fast, so start with a small set of soft, easy-to-change basics in newborn and 0-3 month sizes.
6-8 bodysuits or rompers. Snap or kimono styles make diaper changes quicker. Try our cotton long-sleeve baby romper or the breathable bamboo kimono jumpsuit.
4-6 pairs of pants or leggings, plus a couple of cozy outfits for going out.
2-3 swaddle blankets and a soft hat. Our newborn swaddle blanket & hat set is great for naps and first photos.
Socks or footed outfits to keep little toes warm.
Feeding and burping
5-10 bibs and burp cloths. Spit-ups happen a lot! Our bamboo bibs & burp cloths 5-pack is soft and super absorbent.
A pacifier or two, if you plan to use them. Look for BPA-free silicone like our soft silicone baby pacifier.
Bottles and a bottle brush if you'll be bottle feeding.
Bath time and daily care
A baby grooming kit with a nail clipper, file, nasal aspirator, brush and comb. Everything is in one place in our 6-piece baby care kit.
A soft hooded towel and gentle washcloths.
Cotton swabs for cleaning around ears and the umbilical cord area (never inside the ear canal). Shop baby cotton swabs.
A gentle baby oil for massage and dry skin, like our baby oil with calendula.
Sleep essentials
A firm, flat crib or bassinet mattress with fitted sheets.
Sleep sacks or swaddles instead of loose blankets, following safe sleep guidance.
A white noise machine and blackout curtains can help too.
Keepsakes you'll be glad you have
The newborn stage goes by quickly. A handprint and footprint photo frame kit is an easy way to remember how tiny those hands and feet once were, and it makes a lovely baby shower gift too.
Tips for new parents
Wash baby clothes before the first wear with a gentle, fragrance-free detergent.
Don't overbuy newborn sizes. Many babies move into 0-3 months within a few weeks.
Keep a small changing kit in the car and diaper bag.
